I realized today that the phrase "Happy Memorial Day" is a shade oxymoronic, since we are honoring people who have died in combat, which isn't really a joyous thing to celebrate. But I can't think of any other phrase to use.
President Obama broke some new ground today by honoring the African-American soldiers who fought for the Union in the Civil War. That's the start of a great tradition.
